When sixteen-year-old Ellie Baum accidentally time-travels via red balloon to 1988 East Berlin, she’s caught up in a conspiracy of history and magic. She meets members of an underground guild in East Berlin who use balloons and magic to help people escape over the Wall—but even to the balloon makers, Ellie’s time travel is a mystery. When it becomes clear that someone is using dark magic to change history, Ellie must risk everything—including her only way home—to stop the process.
♡ This book was so good. Probably one of the best and interesting books dealing with time travel I have read!
♡ Time travel by balloon! Teleportation by balloon! Saving people during WWII with magical balloons! Please tell me why are balloons so fun?
♡ The characters were cute, I really enjoyed reading from their perspectives. I enjoyed the fact that Ellie struggles coming to terms with the fact that she has time traveled. A lot of the time in YA, the protagonist has little and/or no reaction to the extreme situations they find themselves in so Ellie’s reaction was amazing to read. Even if it did break my heart at times.
♡ The diversity! Our love interest, one of the main characters, was POC and we also had a side character who identified as lesbian.
♡ I wish we were given more background history on the magic. I get that its blood magic written on a balloon.. but what else? Where did this magic come from? Maybe I missed it or maybe we’ll get this information in the next novels. I don’t know. I hope so. There can never be too much magic.
♡ The ending was extremely predictable. I saw it coming from miles away so I took a star off of my rating for that alone.
♡ THAT CLIFFHANGER THOUGH. NOT COOL.
Do I recommend? YES! Please check this one out when it’s released! The Girl with the Red Balloon is the perfect novel for anyone interested in historical fiction or just anyone looking for a magical read!
